Romania: Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica SA (SNN SA)
NuScale Power is excited to announce a new partnership with the Romania energy company Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica SA (SNN SA or Nuclearelectrica) to exchange business and technical information on NuScale’s groundbreaking nuclear technology. The partnership agreement, which was publicly welcomed by Energy Secretary Rick Perry of the U.S. Department of Energy, will evaluate the development, licensing and construction of a NuScale small modular reactor (SMR) for Romania.
“With many years of experience in nuclear power, SNN SA understands the unique energy needs of Romania,” said John Hopkins, NuScale Power Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “NuScale looks forward to showcasing our safe, scalable, and reliable nuclear technology, and collaborating with SNN SA to determine what role NuScale’s technology can play in Romania’s energy future.”
Nuclear power currently provides 20 percent of domestic energy in Romania. Since its founding in 1998, SNN SA has been the sole operator of nuclear power plants in Romania using CANDU reactor technology. Advanced nuclear technology like NuScale’s can help Romania meet the ambitious EU decarbonization targets (40 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030) in the following ways:
- A 720 MWe NuScale plant would avoid over 6 million tons of CO2 emissions per year (as compared to coal) – the equivalent of taking 1.3 million cars off the road.
- A NuScale Power Plant can also provide low-carbon energy and heat for industrial processes in Romania such as desalination, hydrogen production, and oil refining – helping to truly decarbonize the country’s entire supply chain.
“As the only nuclear power provider in Romania, we see great potential in SMRs because of the clean, safe, and affordable power they provide,” said Cosmin Ghita, Chief Executive Officer of Nuclearelectrica. “We look forward to working with NuScale to see how their groundbreaking technology can benefit our customers and power Romania’s energy needs.”
